I agree, ho hum, and I really thought it would be good, like "Nightmare Before Christmas". Also, it turned into a chase. Is there anything as dull as a chase, good-guys-bad-guys, movie? I fall asleep in Harry Potter though, so I am not a good one to listen to re fantasy and magic, good and evil. Mystery books are fun, but only in foreign languages: then you have a double mystery as you try to both psych out the plot and decipher the language.
Oh yes, I also liked the little Alice at the beginning but not the big Alice. The whole movie was too heavy handed, not droll or subtle like the book, not to mention lacking in logical conundrums.
It was fun hearing young children imitating a British accent after the movie: "Ellis, ovah heah, Ellis!"
My advice: Stay home and rent an Ozu movie.
