miggybed.jpgThis haunting digital projection installation by Miguel Libarnes is one of many highlight of this year’s confident Irwin Scholars Art Exhibition at UCSC’s Porter College.

The current crop of awardees: Chelsea Cramer, Gina Farkas, Ari Finkelstein, Kristen Gautier-Downes, Elizabeth Hibbard, William Lee, Louise Leong, Miguel Libarnes, Oscar Moreno, David Rosales, Marnie Sehayek, Melissa Wong. 

Top UCSC art major creations—from printmaking and photography, to painting and digital animation—fill three of the Sesnon Art Gallery exhibition spaces.

On view through June 16, the show rewards the open-minded connoisseur. Don’t miss it!

New Leaf, New Winetasting

Starting Friday, June 1 New Leaf Market will offer free wine and beer tastings every Friday from 4-6pm – a natural happy hour?

Two fine Spanish wines, Ayles Garnacha and Arregi Getariako Txakolina (yes, there will be a pronunciation quiz) will be poured and discussed by Darlene de la Cerna of Classic Artisan Wines. Each week a different wine or beer will be poured and the series promises to introduce inquiring aficionadoes to artisanal products of exceptional value.
Sounds like a tasty idea that could lead to very happy shopping at the Westside store, 1101 Fair Avenue, SC.

Surf That Wine!

Surf City Vintners continue their on-going educational mission with the newest season of Surf Wine University!

This coming Sunday, May 27 kicks off the workshop series, from noon to 2pm one Sunday a month through September.

Individual classes are $30, $25 for wine club members of any of the Surf City wineries.

May 27: Make Your Own Wine, with Katie Fox of Vino Tabi.
June 24: Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noirs with Nick Guerrero of Vine Hill Winery.
July 15: Chardonnay Styles with Steve Storrs of Storrs Winery.
Aug. 12: Terroir: Understand the Mystery with Joe Miller of Rexford Winery.
Sept. 9: Wine and Cheese: Explore Perfect Pairings with Sue Slater of the Cabrillo College Culinary Arts Program.
