A LOT. Long’s for me was what hardware stores and kitchen gadget stores are for other people. I could troll the aisles all afternoon and be surprised by things I didn’t know I needed. First sign of trouble: could no longer find certain items I had bought there for years – legal size folios in bright colors, with velcro closure. Now they only carried letter size. Then my favorite sunscreen disappeared, the only brand that didn’t break me out. Then “woven” floss, which my dentist recommends. Once I asked a sweet longtime employee what gives, and she remarked sadly that “corporate” was now making the purchasing decisions for the store, rather than the local management. I started ordering these things online. Next thing you know, something new and different. The merchandise is now 90% cheesball. Everything is more expensive except CVS’s own brand, which is poor quality. I imagine it’s a dreadful place to work. And don’t get me started about the squares of gray felt carpeting! I wonder if anyone has a better experience in other places. I found Westside Pharmacy on the corner of Mission & Laurent is delightfully old school, despite shorter hours. Hope you are having a lovely fall, dearie!
Hi,
Having moved right about the switch I can’t comment much but visited last May and was gagged. Remember how much people protested Longs coming onto Mission and fought it tooth and nail. I was not one of them and ended up patronizing it but now I bet people wish it had never been there. Hi Dee.
I always appreciated Longs, but I never knew just how much. I’m close enough to CVS that I still try to go there occasionally and find stuff I could have bought at Longs, but usually walk out disappointed. What a loss.
We miss them too! We used them all the time but CVS kept messing up our prescriptions after they changed over, so we’ve switched to Westside Pharmacy and are much happier.
The minute it opened we began describing CVS as “ghetto” — which I know is an offensive term. It’s so trashy and cheap. I now prefer Safeway, if you imagine such a thing! (Did the heirs of the Long family simply sell out for the cash?)
Westside Pharmacy!
We really miss Longs also. There were so many things I could find at Longs that they no longer have. And the coupon thing is really annoying and gimmicky. The people at CVS, many of whom are the same, say they miss Longs also. We were in Hawaii in the spring and they still have Longs. And it is as I remember: yummy and cheap macadamia nuts, quality products, etc. Sigh.

I never thought I would miss Long’s.;CVS is an Embarrassment and should just fold and go to the retail equal of Dante’s Inferno!!

DITTO!! A LOT!!! Longs was classy, CVS is most definitely NOT! CVS is tacky, generic and plain boring. Wish the folks who ran Longs would come back!
CVS is the worst!!!! Does not compare at all to Longs. hate going into CVS!
