Desserts were all excellent, including a textbook crème brulée, a sexy molten chocolate torte and a superb almond cake (seen here) topped with vanilla ice cream. And since the new Oswald has a full bar, we were able to enjoy adult digestifs like Fernet Branca with our after-dinner espresso.
Prices? Modest – most entrées $22, and appetizers averaging $10. Low enough to seduce a flourishing brasserie clientele. The wine list, with a small, fine listing of Italian and French varietals as well as California premiums, was also priced encouragingly. The bread – remember just how amazing the Oswald bread and its dense chewy crust always was? — the bread was up to our memories.
Get thee to Oswald immediately and taste what we’ve all missed for the past two years. Oswald – 121 Soquel Avenue @ Front Street – 831/423-7427.
I have been to Oswald recently. We shared the winter squash & persimmon soup and the Prawn with orzo salad & tangerine carrot broth – yummy! Followed with House cured pork loin with potato gratin & persimmon compote and we also had the mushroom bread pudding with winter greens & meyer lemon – very good! We shared the almond custard torte and the chocolate souffle. Our server was knowledgable. friendly and attentive. The bread was really good. We had a California wine as well as something from the bar. I can’t wait to get back to Santa Cruz for dinner as Oswald. I live in the Oakland area and am so excited to be back to making plans to drive down the coast to enjoy an evening at Oswald. It’s my favorite restaurant.
I’m so glad that Oswald is open again and hasn’t missed a step!
We are very excited that Oswald is open after 2 years of waiting patiently. The food is toughtfully prepared and as good as ever and the service is great too. Can’t wait for another trip Santa Cruz to visit Oswald. And now Oswald is open for lunch. Great!
