Bad Horn of Christmas

I am getting lots of email from folks who are beside themselves with rage and frustration over the very loud, invasive “holiday” train currently busy lowering property values in the Westside. And all the way downtown.

Interrupting concert performances, waking babies from their naps, causing post-traumatic stress, threats of moving from the area—all of this because some person of influence had a bright idea. Does no one ever consider the consequences of their actions?

This YouTube comes from an irate neighbor Jesse Corona who is determined that whomever perpetrated the unbearable and persistant train horn will put on the brakes.

Train whistle yes. Loud and persistent train whistle no.

Bad Train Horn Update

I just heard back from Mayor Don Lane who adds that he lives 5 blocks from the railroad tracks and is VERY aware of the problem.

There are some regulations affecting this whole thingie – take a look. The train operators are trying to work the wiggle room.  You can provide your own feedback at this page.

Chinotto – the enlightened soda

Chinotto – the enlightened soda

chinotto.jpgIf, like me, you’re a fan of Fernet Branca.….or perhaps Campari (more likely), then you’ll want to try Chinotto, a pungent and refreshing soda drink from the San Pellegrino folks.

I tried some with lunch at Gabriella the other day and found this intriguing drink to be almost magically refreshing. Yes, it’s a bit bittersweet—with a foundation of myrtle orange, the same prime ingredient in Campari. Actually, it starts out sweet, flirts with becoming a blend of coke and rootbeer, but then finishes with a crisp, almost citrusy tang.

But there’s much more going on in what tastes a lot like coca-cola, bitter oranges and a few mysterious sassafrasy and root top notes.

It’s quite delightful. And fun to say. Chinotto.
